British Columbia Hockey League : playoffs Langley Chiefs & Alberni Valley Bulldogs

The best news about hockey comes from people who are in the action :

Rebecca (Langley Chiefs)

Hi Pierre, My boys finished in third place this year. Darnell Dyck is my billet. He is staying at least one more year and probably over the summer. He said recently that if they moved our team back to Chilliwack (which is where his family lives) that he will still live with me and commute!! We start playoffs this Friday and Saturday with home ice advantage. When we are done, then hopefully our local Canucks will take the Stanley Cup (which I used to think was the Grey Cup). Hope you are well and cheer on my boys in your spare time please.

Pierre

Hi Rebecca, it's always a pleasure to read your mails about the British Columbia Hockey League. Darnell Dyck from the Trail Smoke Eaters and now with your team, is an excellent player. I wish you good games against the Alberni Bulldogs. As they are on the sixth position it should be pretty easy. They ended the regular season winless against Nanaimo so this is very bad for their moral. Tomorrow will be very exciting. Send me some newspapers links and I will put it in my small hockey blog. Good luck. Pierre

Rebecca (Langley Chiefs)

We won 5-4 in Overtime - it was not an easy win by any stretch. We played OT - 20 minute periods - finally won with under 3 minutes left. You can read the summary tomorrow on the web site at langleychief.net. The boys played so hard. Tomorrow night is the second game. The boys are so wiped they can barely stand up.

Pierre

Congratulations to the boys. A good work! I will put it on my small hockey blog.

Rebecca (Langley Chiefs)

Game 2 was taken handily - 3-1 with no score in the third period. The boys played their hearts out. Monday and Tuesday we play in Alberni Valley for games 3 and 4. My friend Rita and I will travel over to support the team. Some minor disagreements, testosterone fuelled no doubt, after the final whistle. The emotions are running very high and the next two games will be most interesting.

Pierre

This is Hockey and you're a good mother to take care of the guys. I am reporting it in my small hockey blog this morning. Keep up the excellent work : this sport is our national sport and we are very proud of your boys!

Rebecca (Langley Chiefs)

The Langley Chiefs swept first round of the playoffs against Alberni Valley Bulldogs. Our boys played hard. I travelled with them for the last two games on the road!!!!! Our next conquest will be the Surrey Eagles. We play on the road next Tuesday to begin the 7 game series. Stay tuned.

Pierre

Thank you Rebecca, I'm posting it in the same link and I will add a link to the Surrey Eagles.

Rebecca (Langley Chiefs)

Thanks so much Pierre. We just came back from a political fund raiser where Pat Quinn was the guest speaker. He acknowledged the team and their sweep and at the end of the night we had a team picture with Pat Quinn, the boys, myself and my friend Rita who also travelled with us to Port Alberni. I need to correct the next series is Monday and Tuesday in Surrey, then Thursday and Friday in Langley. The next 3 games only if necessary. Tomorrow I am taking the team to a Vancouver Giants and Portland game. Our line mate Matt Ius is also playing for Portland in the WHL. He is thrilled his BCJHL team will be there to watch him play. The General Manager of the Giants was at our event tonight and offered us tickets and rock star parking. We are going to have a good time tomorrow. We'll be sure to give you the update.

Pierre

Excellent. I am expecting more news to come from you about the team. I installed a photo of Pat after your text. If you have the picture with the team please send it to me and I will upload it.

Rebecca (Langley Chiefs)

Hi Pierre,

Unfortunately we have lost games 2 and 3 of the second round of the series. Tomorrow we play again. There is a great photograph of the boys with Pat Quinn - you can probably access it on my FaceBook by going through to Darnell Dyck who tagged it as a photo of me. I am not that good with FaceBook and tagging photos and all of that.

The boys will regroup and focus on winning the next three games in a row to take the second round away from the Surrey Eagles.

I have faith in them. The Chiefs will prevail.

Pierre

Thank you for the news, Rebecca. I will put this text on the note about Hockey: British Columbia Hockey League : playoffs Langley Chiefs .... I wish good luck to the Chiefs. They are strong and able to prevail.

Rebecca :

Hi Pierre,

The boys played their hearts out tonight. The game was tied at 2 goals each when we went into the first of two overtime periods. Finally, half way through the second overtime period we lost when Surrey Scored a goal. The goalies on both teams gave stellar performances stopping more than 40 shots each. My Langley Chiefs are down 3-1 in the Second Round of the Playoffs but they are number 1 to me. I am proud of every single one of them. Next game is Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the Surrey Arena. I will be there to cheer them on to certain victory.

Pierre :

I wish you the best for next Sunday game!

Rebecca :

Hi Pierre,

Well the run is done. We played Sunday afternoon in Surrey and won 7-5. A great game. Both teams demonstrated courage and, of course, it forced game #6.

On Monday evening in Langley, we were outscored but not outplayed by the Surrey Eagles - falling 4-2.

Surrey now goes on to the Coastal Conference final - their opponent is not yet decided. Either Victoria or Powell River - Game #6 was forced when Powell River defeated Victoria in Overtime late Monday night. Powell River was a very strong team - unstoppable by all accounts until their playoff round with Victoria. That series is now 3-2 Victoria.

Since my boys are done, I am retiring from Junior "A" and will now focus on my NHL team - the Canucks - we are in first place last time I looked.

Thanks so much for all your support Pierre. We will be back in camp in August and I'll update you then.

Rebecca

Pierre :

It was a pleasure Rebecca. This is hockey. Powell River was a very strong team and your boys gave all their best. Then they lost against the Vernon Vipers.
I will read you next year Rebecca.

As a conclusion, here is a paper about the winners in 2011 :

Vipers complete sweep of Kings with 5-4 overtime win on home ice

The Vernon Vipers have gone where no team has gone in the last 29 years.

Vernon won its third-straight Fred Page Cup with with a 5-4 overtime win to sweep the Powell River Kings. The feat matches the Kamloops Rockets from 1962 to 1964, the Nanaimo Clippers from 1977 to 1979 and the Penticton Knights from 1980 to 1982.

A Vipers win looked doubtful in the early going as Matt Garbowsky put the Kings up 1-0 near the seven-minute mark of the first. The visitors increased their lead in rapid fashion at the start of the second with Andrew Pettitt and Daniel Schuler scoring 46 seconds apart before the two-minute mark.

With Powell River leading by three, Vipers coach Mark Ferner called a timeout and it seemed to have the desired effect as Vernon settled down and began to take back momentum. On a power play near the five-minute mark, David Robinson scored his first of the game from Steve Weinstein and Adam Thompson.

The same trio connected on another power play at 12:11 and Kyle Murphy tied the game 3-3 just under four minutes later, with Weinstein again providing a helper. Dylan Walchuk put Vernon in front with a goal just 23 seconds after Murphy's to make it 4-3 for the home team going into the third.

Powell River's Garbowsky, who had been quiet through much of the series, played likely his best game of the four against Vernon and managed to tie the game at 15:14 after a scramble in the Vernon crease to force extra time.

In overtime, Vernon had the better chances and Kings goalie Michael Garteig was sharp to stop a rebound chance by Ryan Renz early on. Not long after that, however, a Vipers shot from the point was stopped by Michael Garteig but the rebound was gathered and swept into the net by Michael Zalewski, sending the 2,400+ crowd at Wesbild Centre and the Vipers players into celebration mode.

Though the win matches Nanaimo and Penticton's accomplishments, it's the first time a team has won three straight BCHL titles over the same opponent.

Weinstein's three helpers in the second period were more points than he had produced in the previous 15 playoff games combined where he had just two assists.

Vernon now awaits an opponent for the Doyle Cup. They'll play the winner of the Alberta Junior Hockey League finals still going on between the Spruce Grove Saints and the Camrose Kodiaks. Spruce Grove leads that series 3-1.

Game 1 of the Doyle Cup will be April 15 in Vernon.
